1 night at the Hotel Jamuna Resort – with Shine Gold Tours India
When we visited here recently the hotel was carrying out some extensive developments but that didn’t interfere with the service or the enjoyment of our stay. In addition to normal stopovers they also run cookery and painting courses.
The staff were very helpful in directing us to the sights in Juhnjuhnu, so we first took our car to the Rani Sati Temple – very popular, if somewhat controversial, as it commemorates the self-immolation (sati) of a merchant’s wife in 1595. Like all Indian temples it’s a mixture of reverence and Disney and has a most interesting Ashram with 300 rooms for pilgrims and tourists.
After visiting the temple we returned to the middle of town and parked before setting off through the vegetable market to find the Kaniram Narsinghdas Tibrewala Haveli, owned by four brothers who now live away from Jhunjhunu but return with their families on occasions. We were enthusiastically shown around by the Munim who made a special point of showing us the many pictures of pukka British las and gentlemen.
We then took an auto rickshaw to the Noor Mosque and the Kehtri Mahal (Palace) with its splendid views over the surrounding Modi Havelis’ roof tops, complete with drying washing, towards the Badalgarh Fort which was unfortunately closed due to an ongoing dispute over ownership.
Then back by rickshaw to the car before setting off for Bikaner. On the way there was time for a few more very impressive frescos at the Fatephur Havelis, this time languidly shown around, or rather pointed around, by a large lady who carried out her duties from the comfort of her bed, just off the courtyard.Only a short journey from Delhi, Jhunjhunu is a fascinating introduction to Rajastahan.
